Sports & Activities

Accelerated Reading Program

At Keys Gate Charter School we have a fun and unique way of motivating and challenging our students with the Accelerated Reading Program. We have created our very own Speedway Race Track. Our students earn points as they read their books and pass their tests on line, and at the same time their car is moving closer and closer to the finish line at the end of the track. In the past three months our students have read and passed over 2,500 books. The enthusiasm for the race is very apparent and intense among our students as they approach the finish line.

Builder's Club

Builder's Club is a service organization attached to Kiwanis International. It's focus is to develop leadership, foster development of strong moral character and encourage loyalty to school, community and nation.

DFYIT (Drug Free Youth in Town)

DFYIT is an organization dedicated to giving recognition to kids who choose to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Our middle school students are participating in this very worthwhile program where students actually get to lead! Officers are elected and members decide what activities are best suited for their club, including community service projects.

Honor Choir

The KGCS Honor Choir is sponsored by our elementary music teacher, Mrs. Davis. Students in 4th and 5th grade are given the opportunity to participate in try-outs at the beginning of the school year. Once chosen, the honors choir meets each Friday from 2:30 – 3:10 to practice. The choir enjoys performing at special places and loves creating special performances for both parents, students, and staff members. The students even make a point to visit each teacher on their birthday for a special birthday song!

Journalism Class

The yearbook for 2008 is a wonderful creation by the Journalism class. The students go out take pictures and interview staff and students. They then create the colorful yearbook pages.

Our Middle School journalism class is responsible for creating the Keys Gate yearbook which is available for all students. The students experience the entire process of putting together the book and work hard at selling copies and ad space. The finished product is quite impressive and enjoyed by all!

Keys Gate Youth Ambassadors (KGYA)

Keys Gate Charter School is proud to announce that we have been selected to participate in the O Ambassadors program, a joint project of Oprah's Angel Network and Free The Children. Keys Gate has established our own service club called Keys Gate Youth Ambassadors (KGYA) for our 4th & 5th grade students.

KGYA will be part of a network of Oprah's O Ambassadors clubs across North America that will be working towards the United Nation Millennium Development Goals, learning about global issues and making a tangible difference in the lives of their peers in the developing world!

National Junior Honor Society

The National Junior Honor Society proudly participates in a tutoring/mentoring program with students from kindergarten and first grade. A select group of National Junior Honor Society middle school students have been paired with students chosen by their teachers that are in need of additional assistance in reading and math. Every Thursday, they are treated to one on one time with their tutor/mentor who assists them with enforcing and reviewing very important skills in phonics, reading and math.

Safety Patrol

The KGCS Safety Patrol team is made up of specially chosen fifth grade students. These students have shown themselves to be leaders in their classroom and within our school, on a daily basis. The Safety Patrol team assists with arrival each morning, greeting each person with a smiling face. The Safety Patrol team also jumps into action to help out with special events, such as school parades, special visitors, and other special events.
